Since the beginning of the 90’s fair trade is the certificate for agricultural commodities. It is mainly products from Asian, African and Latin American countries. Certificates from the legally acknowledged organisation are only received for products which fulfil verifiable criteria with social sustainability. These are:
- minimum price for producers which are above the world market price
- direct purchasing at the producer without middlemen
- planning dependability through long-term contracts
- protection against debt through pre-financing
- compliance with internationally applicable labour protection regulations
- development of educational institutions, medical services, and ecological cultivation are all financed through excess profit
To guarantee the observation and verification of these regulations and the rules of fair trading, international organisations have been set up to control the eligibility for market access of potential candidates. Therefore, respectability and safety are always granted. |
